Work Experience - Banagher Concrete - 23/10/17 - 27/10/17
On Monday morning I woke up at 7 o’clock. I had to be in Banagher for 8. I got a lift from my employer Sean Cunningham who works in Banagher Concrete. When we arrived I was brought down to the canteen to meet a man called Jamie, who went
through all the safety requirements with me. After that he gave me a pair of overalls, gloves and a hard helmet. Sean then gave me a tour of the place and brought me back to the garage where he works. He then introduced me to his other workmen. Some of there names were Joe, Denis, Matt, and Sean. They usually fix or make anything that the other workers need or brake. For example, trucks, forklifts and barriers. I was put working with Sean for the morning. He was doing some welding. He showed me how to weld and gave me some useful tips. We then went for break at 10. After break I had to paint this big steel door frame for Denis. I had to wipe off all the rust before I started painting so that the paint would stick to it. I spent the rest of the day painting the steel frame. I finished at work at 3:30.
I again got a lift with Sean to Banagher. I started work at 8. Denis told me that we would be putting up a steel rail, where the workers can hang onto in case they fall. We had to carry all the stuff over to the far the shed, because our forklift was being repaired. Some of the stuff we brought over were a welder, welding rods, angle grinder, and a extension cable reel lead. We took our breaks at 10 and 1 again. We stayed working on that for the day and I finished work at 3:30.
On Wednesday I was with Sean Neylon in the garage for the morning. He was fixing a truck that one of the drivers left into the garage. One of the tyres were burst and we had to replace it with a new one. We also had the pump the rest of them to make sure they all had the same tyre pressure. After break, I went back helping Denis putting up the steel rail. He also show me how to weld, because he said I would be welding tomorrow. I went home at 3:30.
I again arrived in Banagher at 7:50 and put on my overalls and hard helmet. I went straight over to Denis and he told me what we would be doing. I had to weld small pieces of steel, onto the steel rail we would be hanging up. Denis then gave me a few tips on welding and I found them very useful. I had to get through around 30 pieces so it took me a good while. When I finished I had to place the steel bars on the forklift and bring them over to the far shed where Denis had been working. We then hung the rail up and tested it to see if it was sturdy. I finished again at half 3.
On Friday, my final day of work I was working with Sean in the morning helping cleaning up the garage. After lunch, myself and Denis finished putting up the steel rail for the workers safety.
Overall, I really enjoyed my work experience in “Banagher Concrete”. Although it was hard work, I liked working in there and was promised a summer job there. I also got €70 for all my work!
